It all began in a garden in Congleton.

As a youngster, I spent school holidays with my grandparents and was soon drafted in to lend a hand when bending down to weed and tend the flower beds became difficult.

What started as a simple chore soon grew into a passion. I was never happier than when I was cutting the grass, trimming the edges, picking up clippings, deadheading flowers, or learning to sow tomatoes in the greenhouse (though perhaps not quite so much when it came to cleaning the mower afterwards).

At the end of each day spent working in the garden, my Grandad would bring out a cup of tea for my Nan and himself, along with a glass of squash for me. There was a quiet satisfaction all round, and together we enjoyed the calm of the garden. I remember the feeling well.

I didn’t begin my career as a gardener, but eventually the desire to recapture that joy of being outside and working in the garden became impossible to ignore. It led me to enrol in horticulture studies and deepen my knowledge of plants.
